3D & 4D Ultrasound — What’s the Difference?

3D ultrasound builds a detailed, still, three-dimensional image from multiple 2D slices — giving a much more lifelike view of your baby's face and features than standard 2D imaging. 4D ultrasound adds the fourth dimension: time, showing those 3D images moving in real time, so you can watch your baby stretch, yawn or move their hands as it happens.

When Is 3D/4D Ultrasound Used?

Most commonly during pregnancy, typically from around 26–32 weeks when there's enough amniotic fluid and the baby's face isn't obscured by the placenta or umbilical cord. It's also used for selected pelvic or gynaecological examinations where extra anatomical detail helps with diagnosis.

Is It Just for Keepsakes?

Not only. While many parents love the keepsake images and video clips, 3D/4D imaging also gives our sonographers additional anatomical detail that can support diagnostic assessment alongside your standard pregnancy scans.
